Ryan Dorsie is the Senior Area Manager based in our Coupar Angus office, and he provides a great example of this hands-on support and dedication to the job. He looks after carrot operations across Angus, managing a broad list of tasks required to bring this nutritious, high-fibre vegetable to our plates.
Whether at the sowing or harvesting, Ryan is around to help with carrot operations.
Britain chomps its way through 700,000 tons of carrots every year, which means the pressure on farmers to deliver is immense. For a single grower, the logistics can be overwhelming, but Ryan co-ordinates the entire lifecycle of the crop.
His work begins by organising land rentals and ensuring the secure delivery of some of the 22billion carrot seeds planted across the UK annually. He then co-ordinates the ground preparation, sowing, fertiliser supply and fuel for all the machinery working the land.
To protect the crop, Ryan arranges for agronomists to visit and schedules sprayers for crop protection. When winter approaches, he manages the critical process of strawing down to protect them from frost.
Finally, Ryan oversees the harvesting and the loading of lorries to transport the produce to processing sites in Yorkshire, up to 290 tons every day. He keeps track of yields in fields and plans ahead to ensure that there is a continuous supply to meet the needs of the processing plants, and planning the machinery to be moved between the various fields.
